How To Use Compost Buckets

Compost Buckets make it incredibly easy to recycle your kitchen scraps and naturally fertilise your garden. You don’t need fancy equipment - just a shovel or hand spade and a small patch of dirt. Once your buckets are in the ground, they quietly do the work for you, feeding the soil and boosting plant health within a two‑metre radius.
Step 1 — Choose Your Spot
Pick a location in your garden that’s easy to access. Dig a hole the same size as your Compost Bucket. This will be the bucket’s permanent home, so choose a spot near plants that could use a nutrient boost.
Step 2 — Install Your Compost Bucket
Place the bucket into the hole so the rim sits just above the soil surface. Fit the lid into the bucket (it works either way up) and lock it closed. This keeps pests out while allowing worms to move freely through the soil.
Step 3 — Add Your Food Scraps
Open the lid, drop in your food scraps, and close the locking lid. Repeat as needed. Every now and then, add a splash of water to keep the scraps moist — this helps the composting process.
There’s no need to empty the bucket. Simply keep adding scraps on top of the older ones. As the food breaks down, worms move in, carrying nutrients out into the surrounding soil. Over time, your plants will thrive thanks to this natural, continuous fertiliser source.
How Many Compost Buckets Do You Need?
A simple rule of thumb:
-
1 bucket per person in your household + 1 extra
-
Couple - 3 buckets
-
Family of four - 5 buckets
This ensures you always have enough space for your scraps while keeping the composting cycle flowing smoothly.
